Synchrotron Research: Chromium and Arsenic in the Oil Industry

Project information

As part of the Canadian Light Source Students on the Beamline Competition the Research Team investigate Chromium and Arsenic throughout the bitumen extraction process. In particular specific oxidation states, speciation and concentrations where investigate from samples taken through the bitumen process using X-ray Absorption techniques such as XRF and XANES. Data analysis was performed on the data to identify changes in oxidation, speciation and concentrations using techniques such as linear combination fitting. The research was summarized in a scientific poster which won the 2017 Students on the Beamline Poster Competition.
